About Medicare-funded genomic testing

From July 2022, new Medicare Benefit Scheme (MBS) items were introduced for genetic testing for heritable kidney disease.

Medicare funded genetic testing for MBS items 73401 and 73402 covers whole exome or genome sequencing for variants associated with heritable cystic kidney disease and heritable kidney disease (chronic patients), respectively, where there is suspicion of monogenic condition.

The information on these pages can help nephrologists in Victoria to order funded genomic tests. If you are a parent, family member or carer and you would like to find out more about genomic testing, please refer to these patient, family and carer resources.
